Job Overview
Are you an experienced GP looking for a unique and rewarding challenge? Working in prison healthcare offers the opportunity to deliver high-quality primary care to a diverse patient group in a secure environment. You’ll play a vital role in managing complex health needs and supporting continuity of care.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Provide GP-led clinics for patients in custody 
  • Conduct comprehensive health assessments and consultations 
  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic conditions 
  • Prescribe medication and develop treatment plans in line with clinical guidelines 
  • Respond to urgent and emergency situations 
  • Work collaboratively with nursing, pharmacy, and mental health teams 
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and comply with prison healthcare protocols

Person Specification
Education and Training – Essential

  • GMC registration and licence to practise 
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD 

Knowledge and Experience – Essential

  • Experience in primary care settings 
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and safeguarding 
  • Ability to manage complex cases in a challenging environment 

Desirable

  • Experience in health and justice settings 
  • Substance misuse or mental health experience 

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent diagnostic and decision-making skills 
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities 
  • Computer literacy (clinical systems and Microsoft Office) 


Personal Qualities

  • Professional attitude 
  • Positive approach to change 
  • Non-judgemental and respectful

Main Duties of the Job

As a Band 6 RGN, your responsibilities will include: 

  • Nurse-led clinics (e.g., wound care, health checks)  
  • Medication administration and treatment delivery  
  • Emergency response and triage  
  • Initial health assessments for new arrivals  
  • Supporting audits and quality improvement  
  • Acting as a resource for junior staff during shifts and assisting with complex cases

  • Registered General Nurse Level 1

Knowledge and Experience – Essential

  • Knowledge of current healthcare issues 
  • Understanding of clinical governance, audit, and risk management 
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team 
  • Ability to manage deteriorating patients in a complex environment 
  • Understanding and application of confidentiality 


Desirable 

  • Experience of working within Health & Justice 
  • Experience of working in primary care/substance misuse/acute care 
  • Understanding of local and national key documents and their impact on health care delivery in a prison setting


Skills and Abilities 

  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team 
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills 
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office) 
  • Accurate record keeping
